I have a 04 ST XLT. 206,000 Miles..I do not know when the last time the Transmission was serviced..Should I take the truck to some place and get the fluid, filter and gasket changed or should I do it myself. If I do it myself are there any hidden surprises that I need to know? How much fluid and what type will I need? Is there anything I need to for a transmission with this many miles..

With that many miles I would take it to a reliable transmission shop and have them check it out to see if you should have it flushed/ just change the fluid and filter/ or leaving it alone and add fluid as needed.

I would also have the transfer case checked as well as the diff's if you have no service history with this many miles to be safe. You can check the transfer case and diffs yourself for shavings, etc..

I know the the gasket is leaking a little bit..So I know I will need that changed.. The rear end has been replaced already..The last rear end started having issues about 125,00 miles..

Change the fluid and filter. IMO do not flush it with that many miles on it!

I was thinking the same thing...How much T-Fluid will I need to get for just a drain and filter change..I need make sure I get enough before I drain it..

How many miles did the truck have when you got it?

24,000 Miles....I hvae had the truck forever...but about year two years ago..or 80,000 miles ago I was out of the country and that is when my rear end got replaced and I am not sure if my wife got them to service the transmission then..They did all kinds of work but I am not sure if they did that..I have not been having any problems but I have been thinking and worrying about it some...I have 206,000 miles and it has been running like a champ...I just do not want to go and screw up the trans by getting it flushed..

Then if the fluid was replaced 80k miles ago then I would change the fluid again, if it wasn't I would not change the fluid at all but just top off as needed. Changing the fluid may result in needing a transmission rebuild.
