Problem: My transmission was switching gears randomly and not holding a consistent RPM at any one gear. I would drive and watch the RPM needle move up and down when traveling at a constant speed. The transmission would occasionally shift into neutral and then jerk back into gear.

Diagnosis: There is a bundle of wires on the driver's side that runs from the transmission up behind the engine block to the primary wiring harness attached to all of the fuel injectors, etc. One wire had rubbed against the engine block so much that it exposed the copper wiring. The bare wire was causing an intermittent short as it contacted the engine block.

Solution: Wrap the exposed wire with electrical tape and then wrap the whole bundle together with electrical tape and then zip tie the wiring bundle to anything that will keep it from touching the engine block. SUCCESS! The transmission shifts just fine with very noticeable improvements when shifting into the passing gear.
