I have two ways to determine my ATF temperature: a pod mounted pillar gauge and datalogging via the OBD-II port. Some of the new electronic "gadgets" that I'm not familiar with have the ability to read and display parameter identifiers (pids) that the PCM makes available via OBD-II. They are reasonably priced (from what I've heard) and are a lot easier to use than installing an actual gauge. I installed a remote ATF filter and sensor for the pillar pod mounted gauge.
