- 1999 ford explorer sport
So i have a 99 explorer sport v6, 4.0 OHV, 160,000 miles. Two weeks ago i went out to drive it and as I started driving I immediately had no power at all. When i hit the gas pedal it would barely even move, especially going up hills, and the car would shake a little. But when i shift in reverse, it runs fine and has power. After driving a block, I pulled over and checked the tranny fluid. It had metal shavings all over the dipstick and was low.
I had suspected the transmission was having problems for a few months now (I know i should have checked it out earlier), because at times when i had 4x4 engaged it would sometimes stay in 4x4 after switching it back to auto, I also heard a thud coming from the tranny every time i came to a stop.
After seeing the metal shavings on the dipstick along with the other problems i've had, I decided to swap out the transmission. After swapping out the transmission, thinking that would solve the issue, IT STILL HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE!!! No power, it shifts fine into all gears, still has power in reverse, still shakes when i give it gas. We checked the tranny fluid after test driving the new transmission, looks good and no shavings. The issue obviously isn't the transmission.
My mechanic suspected that the front differential has failed and needs replaced and is what caused failure in my old tranny. Whether this is true, i dont know, i'm not too savvy on transmissions and differentials.
I don't want to spend more money on a new differential until im certain thats the problem. If anyone has any idea what the problem could be or have had the same issue, PLEASE RESPOND. I'm trying to figure out whats wrong, I drive eighty miles to and from work everyday and need my car.
