Forgive the newb question guys, but do the 4.0L SOHC motors all use the same transfer case? I just pcked up a 99 sport for super cheap, but its a standard, and I don't know if auto and manual are the same transfer case at all... thanks guys.

They are the same for the OHV. I can't imagine them being different for the SOHC....

Transfer cases cases in the second generation (95-01) can not be determined based on the engine. Although they operate very similar internally and are all BorgWarner-4405, there are subtle differences between the years - the most important of which is the VSS sensor at the back which is required for the 96-97 Explorer but not the 98 and newer.

So in my case I wouldnt really have to worry about the sensor then... if I even need a transfer case yet, I am not sure.

Thats right, but I would stick to a 98 or newer transfer case.

Really short version: A 99 can use any t-case from '98-'01.

Longer answer:

95-96: U-joint front output, Output Shaft Speed Sensor on the rear output.
97: CV front output, Output Shaft Speed Sensor on the rear output.
98-01: CV front output, NO OSS, and no provision to install one.

Ah good catch, totally forgot about the front output.

Okay, thanks a lot guys... Hey, on a side note, does anyone know if there is an online BGB, or repair manual posted anywhere for 2nd gen Explorers?

im sorry i have the same question but i didnt understand the anwser but im changing the t-case in a 2000 ranger was that a yes 98-01 will work

Yup!

Yes, anything from '98-'01 should work

Okay cool. Some guy was just telling me at an auto parts place that they were all different in those years, and each one had an ID tag or something he needed...? Is there difference between the electronic shift, and full time AWD? And Manual/Autos are the same as well?

I'll give you the really short answer: The guy at whatever place you were talking to was ill-informed. There are two possible cases for 99: A 44-05 and a 44-04. The 44-04 is a single speed all wheel drive case that was only available behind the V-8. Since the V-8 was only available in the 4-door, yours, by default, is a 44-05. There was only one choice for 99, but any case from 98-01 will plug and play just fine.

Thanks buddy. So I will have spent about $1500 to get her going right, $1300 on the truck, so about $2800. Sound okay for a 99 sport?

Probably not bad if you're looking to keep it.... Not going to make a whole lotta dough on it if you're trying to make a buck though...

But you should be able to get the case rebuilt for WAY less than $1500 IMHO... If you're handy, you can probably do a complete rebuild in your garage for around $600 including new case halves.
