92 ford ranger 2.9l auto 4x4 Won't shift into drive or reverse. Fluid is good. Shifter arm on the side of tranny is connected and seems to work but feels like you could pull it right out? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the help. I am helping my son try to fix his truck and was mis-informed about the shift lever, but we checked the z link anyway and it was fine. We took the bell housing off to inspect the pump and found a gear in the pump with the "ears' worn off and the bushing in the bell housing is in bad shape. I have an 89 2.7l 2wd tranny and I'm wondering if we could swap out the damaged gear? Also wondering if the bell housings on these two trannies are interchangeable since the 89 one looks good?

Thanks again for the information related to the gears. I have 2 other related questions. I am wondering about just swapping the bell housing from the 89, 2.9, 2wd onto the 92,2.9, 4wd since it is in good shape. Do you know if they are interchangeable? Also, since the pump was damaged, I am wondering if there is a way to tell if the rest of the tranny is o.k. before I buy new gears, or is it cheaper and faster to just find a used tranny and swap the whole thing?
