I use mine like I think a trucks supposed to by used, and my auto only crapped out once. Everyone has their preferences.

The manual is definitely more reliable than the automatic for the 1st gens, the weak link just seems to be the slave cylinder. The downside is, with the right gears, an automatic tows alot more weight. If it's an option, you may want to keep your 1st gen 5 speed and get a later gen with an auto as well.

Well before i bought it, my explorer was used mainly for towing a boat and traliers and the transmission has been replaced twice already and it definately needs a new one so i'd say stick with a manual. But ultimately its up to you

if you get an automatic, i would say that you should put at least one more external cooler and maybe a filter. these old trannys need all the help they can get. mine needs a rebuilt right now. Anime4x4 is right though, they will probably tow better. you should definitely see about a newer one with a 5-speed automatic
