I recently purchased a Trick Flow upper intake plenum for my 4.6. and found out it wouldn't work on my '04 despite saying it would in Summit Racing's catalog and Trick Flow's website. I contacted Trick Flow and since they're located close to me I even took my Explorer there for them to look at. I'll tell you they were so nice and helpful. Alot of other companys would have told me I was out of luck and nothing can be done but to return the part for a refund but not them. So looks like they might possibly design one for '04 Explorers and install it on my Explorer sorta like a test vehicle. They tell me that Mustang owners with a similiar piece and the stock t-body got approx 10 hp extra. Not bad for a part that runs around $120.00. I had mentioned this website to them and told them there would probably be others interested in this part also. They had asked me to try to find out because if there is enough people we could possibly do a group buy. So..if anyone here is interested in getting one please let me know. I'm not sure if they are talking the '04 part only or the one that I had gotten that covers up to '03. Either way lemme know what year u have and that your interested and I'll see if we get enough people and hopefully get a group buy together.

This adds horse power but does it save MPG?

i'm not sure about that. But with only adding approx 10 horsepower how much more gas can it use?

Well the thing you have to realize, is that for better mileage your engine has to be able to breath better. The 10 extra horse power may or may not show up, probably depends upon your other modifications. If you use a good filter, I see no reason you shouldn't get better mileage. It's not going to tack on 5-10 more miles a gallon, but 1-2 is highly possible. Just depends on what else you have. Like Aldive, he has a gas sipper explorer because all of the modifications he's done are helping and contributing to one another to give him the mileage he's seeing.

So in short, the air filter along with other mods should help with mileage. But with just filter intake alone, I see no reason why you shouldn't see a 1-2 mpg gain. As long as you're easy on the throttle which will be hard to do, it'll sound way different.

so the reason it doesn't fit is because our engines are only 2 valve compared to the musty that have either 4 or 5 as I'm lead to believe.
I'll take one at that price for sure. even in aussie dollars and shipment it will be good buying !!
Scotty

There are many reasons it doesn't fit. 1) '04 has the drive by wire throttle body, 2) '04 did not have an IAC valve as previous years did, 3) '04 has a heated PCV valve that is mounted in the upper intake plenum and 4) has an EVAP hose coming off of the back of the plenum. As I stated in my previous post it looks like they're gonna design one for '04 and possibly later years and use my Ex as a test vehicle. I'm not sure what set up the '05's and later have on them. The one they design might also work on those ones as well. If anyone has access to an '05 or later and can compare it with an '04 I can let them know if it's the same. Or better yet if someone can take pics of the upper intake plenum on an '05 or later 4.6 and send to me I can forward the pics to Trick Flow. Lemme know.

Is my 2002 the same as your 2004?

nah...your '02 will use the one they presently sell. I called them and left a message to see if those ones would also be available for a potential group buy or just the one they design for '04s. Once I find that out I'll leave a message here so anyone who is interested can let me know.

only redeaming quality of the 02's-03's is the fact they're A LOT easier to mod then the 04-05.

I agree with that. It's pretty hard trying to find any performance mods for an 04.

Scott the Mustang GT's all had the 2V SOHC 4.6 V8 from 96-04 model years. The Cobra's from 96-04 had the 4V DOHC 4.6 V8. The Explorer's have a nearly identical engine to the 99-04 Mustang GT's. Same heads, same cams, same internals, different block (aluminum), and different front engine cover but that is it. Still a direct swap.

There are a huge amount of mods made for the 96-04 Mustang's that will work for your explorer, you just have to look for them instead of assuming they aren't there. Built bottom end, different pistons (for high CR or lower) CNC ported heads, Cams, CAI, electric water pump, adjustable cam gears, rear gears, various differentials, superchargers (with a little adaptation), nitrous, custom tuning and so on.

I knew there was some stuff but I don't have the cash for major performance mods. I'm just trying to get some of the best ones I can find for a reasonable price.

CAI, catback exhaust, headers, and tune is more than enough for most out there.

Thanks for that Rocket, I'd been lead to believe that the mustys had more valves, thanks for correcting

But not all of us :D

(ok, that means I need money for it too.. but I'd like to SC my X)

So far on a limited budget all I have engine performance wise is CAI and Flowmaster 50.

The muffler itself will not gain any performance though it will make the engine sound more aggressive. The CAI is a good start, just got to keep on trucking towards whatever goals you have for your truck.

well..hopefully this works out and Trick Flowmakes that upper intake plenum for me. That should help out a little.

So..as I mentioned in the beginning of this post...I'm working on a possible group buy of the Trick Flow upper intake plenum for the 4.6. I had asked if anyone was interested so I can get a number to the Trick Flow people and haven't heard from anyone but one person. Anyone else interested?...Speak up!!
