My 1997 Explorer 4.0 OHV has been very reliable. The only annoying problem is trying to start it when it's cold outside. My explorer just cranks and cranks and doesn't turn over. I don't crank it too long each time, but It takes a few attempts to finally get the engine to turn over. What could be the problem?

Any information would be very helpful.

Thank you

you mean it cranks but won't start, right??

first, try turning the key ON for 2 seconds then OFF for 10 seconds, repeat 2 more times. does engine start right up??

if not, check the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor and the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor with a scan tool to see if they are reading the correct temps.

on my explorer it had this issue. It was the IAC valve. When i cleaned it the problem continued but when i got a new valve it was good as new

I replaced the IAC recently due to hearing the horrible humming. I guess I will try scanning the engine to try to pull some codes or locate the problem.

Could it be a bad Fuel pump or dirty MAF?

I will try the "key on" and "key off" trick to see if it works the next time.

I appreciate the feedback....please keep it coming!!!
