My ex was working fine until Monday when I thoughly washed it after a day in the mud. I was washing in the front wheelwells and probably got some/alot of water on the components under the hood.

Here are the symptoms;

93 XLT - 4.0 pushrod

Truck will start and run for a few seconds the first time you try to start it after it has been sitting for awhile. If you try to start it again, it just cranks, but doesn't start at all.

I'm suspect something is causing the fuel to only be supplied when you first crank it, but cut off after that. When you first turn the key you can hear the fuel pump pressurize the system so that is working... also, I had the pump replaced about 2 years ago, so it should be fine.

Suggestions? If this is caused by something being wet, then what could it be?

Thanks,
Chris Bright

Just bumping the post up because I haven't got any responces. :frustrate

If you suspect a fuel supply problem, I would start by replacing the fuel pump relay.

After you turn it over the first time, does the fuel pump whine-(turn on) on subsequent tries?
If not, then it probably would be a fuel pump/electrical problem.

hmmm i'll bet you're just wet. pull all the lugs, crank it for like a minute, then let it dry overnight. put all the plugs back in check check firing order then give it a try.

on a mustnag 5.0 the computer trips the fuel pump for 2 seconds when key goes hot then shuts it off until a trigger in the distributor tells the computer the engine is rotating. not sure thats the case with the ex. you say it runs, then dies. a year or 2 ago i was playing in the water, on a bone stock 92 in about 2-3' of flood water, k i was like 17 and i didnt know any better. but anywho i stalled in water above my hubs, ouch. finally got it started by just hamering the **** out of the pedal while cranking. got it to move VERY low powered in 4 lo. ran like **** forever until i pulled in to a parking lot (dry) and just gave it hell. i put it up to 5k for about a minute straight then it ran fine. now surprisingly the motor hasnt blown up yet and i dont suggest doing this to yours. let it dry for a few days and see what happens.

Hi all,

It isn't the fuel pump relay... I jumped it (wired) so that it would always run and I got the same results... I sure it is just something water logged, but it has been 4 days so I took it over to the local Ford... I stressed that I didn't expect it to be anything major and that I just couldn't find the problem... hopefully I won't get too hosed and they can find the problem in a 1/2 hour or so.

I'll post the results.
