Trying to find out what trans I have.

I have a 1997 XLT 4wd 4.0 w/auto. Door tag says trans. should be a 5R55e.But I only have 4 gears.Dash shows only D,1,2.Did some one put older trans in ?

It should be a 5R55E.. I highly doubt someone stuck a 4 speed in there..

Unlikey, just because the gear selector doesn't show you all the gears doesn't mean the trans was changed out. Those are just all the "manual" options the computer and valve body will allow you to do.

Mine has

P R N (D) D 1 2 (A4LD)

The only reason mine has (D) and D is that I don't have an O/D off switch. You do. So by putting my selector in D it shuts down the tranny's over drive ability in the same way as if you pushed your O/D off switch.

Found stamped #s on side of trans: P97GT-7006-BBR. Any info on what type it is I would greatly appreciate it !
