I finally picked up a replacement transmission range sensor from NAPA and want to install it myself. I noticed the sensor has clear alignment marks from manufacturing. It's pretty tight in that area around the linkage. Any advice on making this install easier? Thanks for any feedback.

The TRS is actually an electrical switch. A special tool is recommended for correct alignment when installing. There is a bit of adjustment allowed in the mounting holes. The switch contacts must align correctly with the "detents" in the gear selector, the "clicks" felt when moving it.

I place the selector in "Neutral", center the TRS movement between the extremes allowed, lightly tighten down so it cannot move. Start engine, and check by carefully moving selector to D and to R, noting if the amount of lever movement when engagement occurs, is approximately equal in both directions. If not, move the switch just a bit, repeat procedure. When the switch is centered in "N" position, it will locate properly in all the others. imp

Thanks for the feedback.

Also on mine there was 2 line that can be lined up to center it. They are hard to see but they were there and it worked for me. There was a you tube video on it also.

Number4, I'm subscribed to that guy on YT. Good info there.

He's got a lot of great videos. Just remember to click on the ads so he gets a credit.

I recently installed a TRS on my cougar without the special tool. As long as you put your trans in neutral and doesn't move/rotate the sensor out of the box, you're good to go (it's neutral out of the box) it has some marks too so takes photos of that in case you accidentally move it.

same process on taurus,f150 and explorers. The FSM just makes it complicated.

Right now I've sprayed the main center bolt with PB Blaster to loosen it up. It's pretty stubborn and the shaft from the transfer case makes it pretty tight in there along with the heat shield. I'm taking my time. The trans has pretty distinct and secure shift points so as long as I can see the line I should be good to go.
