The air box on my truck after years of service and heat, became bent and warped around where the gear clamp secures it to the intake tube. What better excuse to do a little upgrade! Only issue is I have the round/tubular style air box with the internal MAF sensor mounting, so just using the Spectre adapter is not an option with this style box. However, Spectre does make everything required to do the job.

Round intake box:

Fitment is perfect, very snug. This cost me a little less then $100 CAD to do with ordering parts off Amazon and Performance Improvements.

Nice work!

Personally I would be afraid of sucking in water and my engine bay is always super dirty

Like your set up. Did it improve anything at all for performance?

Nope lol. The truck has 360 000km on it so i wasnt expecting any gains. I did it because the stock air box was all distorted where it goes into the rubber inlet tube from years of heat (one rad hose is very close to that area) and over tightening the worm clamp (thats probably my fault)

Surprisingly it has stayed super clean. The trucks front end is covered in salt spray from the roads and the filter is bone dry.

You should consider fabbing up some sort of heat shield, like in this thread, http://www.explorerforum.com/forums...o-diy-cai-for-4-0-sohc-explorer-sport.342076/

Thats the next thing to make. The only issue is that the OE rubber inlet house takes a nose dive right where the new filter starts, so anything I make is either going to have to have a crazy angle so I can bolt it up the the adapter or find some way to seal up the hole on a straight style heat shield.
