Depends...

Depends on what was done in the last couple tune ups. There is PCV valve, fuel and air filter, fluids(tranny, differentials), flush rad, check tire pressures. These obviously don't have to be done too often, but need to be checked.

When I bought my truck the guy didnt say anything about the last time it was tuned up but when I bought it, I immediatly changed the really dirty air filter to a K&N so I am thinking that the truck hasnt been tuned up in a while plus its starting to run a little crappy. I check the fluids all the time but how do i know if i need to change the tranny fluid?

If it is a darker color, not red, just change it. Better to be safe than sorry. You can supposedly smell
bad ATF as well, but the best way is to just look at it. You don't want to take a chance with an Explorer tranny, kinda flaky to begin with, so change it to be safe. Also would recommend a tranny shop doing it as well, if you just drop the fluid yourself, you will not get about %70 of it. You need to flush the old fluid out and run the new stuff in. (they hook up to the lines, so as to replace all of it).

This is if you have an automatic, the manual is just open the drain plug and let it run out. Be sure to clean any flakes off the drain plug (magnetic), put it back in then fill with 2.8 quarts (5.6 pints).

I do have an automatic and that really sounds like a pain in the @$$ to do so does anyone know about how much that would cost to have done?

I don't know about US prices, but here in Canada a tranny flush is about $50-75, so probably about $30-50 US. The others can correct me if I am wrong.
