I had a bad experience recently with going offroad. South carolina is notoriously rainy and muddy and i HAVE to go off the paved road every once in awhile.

What i was thinking was since i dont have 4x4. Cant i just get a more aggressive offroad tread in the same size tire and have no ill effects other then it looking a tad silly?

If so. suggest a brand if you dont mind. I dont go offroading all the time so it doesnt have to be super duty. I just need better traction these street tires wont give me.

Please and thank you.

For mud I assume? I mean I always go AT's for any truck I own. BFGoodrich AT's/MT's, Goodyear Wranglers are also good and cheaper. Just buy the type based off what you need. Those are my 2 favorites though.

Yeah mostly mud. Can i put those on JUST my rear tires and have no problems though? thats the real question here.

Yeah u can run 2 sets of tires one front one rear just keep them the same size

Run the same type tire on all 4 wheels.
Having a good tire on the rear will get you the traction you need to move forward, but without the same traction up front, steering and brake performance will limit you.

Does you no good to go forward without being able to steer and stop.

That used to be the norm just about everywhere with snow tires prior to the mid-1980's when front wheel drive cars and all season radials became dominate. It is still very common set up on 2WD trucks in the rural midwest. Street tires in front and all-terrains in back, often with wider footprint though usually the same diameter. Limits your tire rotations to side<-->side but otherwise works for what you are looking to accomplish.

I had a bad experience with two different tires on my 08 Explorer. I replaced the rear tires with BFG Long Trails which were the same size tire as the Goodyear Forteras that were on the front. I didn't think it would cause any problems, but it did. My truck kept trying to shift in and out of 4wd. I thought it was my T-case going bad, but the dealer indicated that the computer was so sensitive that it picked up the slight differences in the two types of tires and caused issues with 4wd system. I had never heard of this happening, but two new Long Trails on the front cured the problem (They were going to need replacing anyway soon and my cheap ass should have done all four at once......). Not sure if the older model Explorers would have this issue, but just wanted you to know my 08's experience. Plus yours is not 4X4.

I dont recomend this either. You will have less grip on the front off road, and less grip from the rear on road. You will expierence heavy understeer or oversteer depending on what you are driving on.
