today i contacted the local ford parts department because i never got bearings or seal
for my aformentioned rotor and the cragens and auto zones didnt know what i was talking about
at the dealer i gave them my vin#:"one moment please" was their reply.
opon return they said:"actually, according to your hard tag you have a 3.73 gear ratio"
huhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i said:"you got that from my vin#?"
they replied:"no we got that from your HARD TAG"
(i am on the phone,by the way)
they went on to explain that there is a tag on the front pumpkin with information
on it. they did refuse to explain how they saw this tag over the phone!!!!!!!!!
(i havent had a chance to check for said "hard tag" yet")
i have much food on my plate!
to further add to all this confusion the ford parts department informed me that
both style rotors accept the same bearings and seal.
with all this information i am more confused then when i started.
NEW FRIENDS. when i find out i will let you know!
i desperately need to know how to read a vin#,however.

i wish to add that the sticker on my driver door has a box called axle.
in this box is the number 45.
according to another thread i was reading ,45 stands for 4.55 ratio on a 8.8 rear.
thanks to MrQ i know the front ratio is the same as the rear
(thank you MrQ)
further confusion,now! who is correct?

thank you MrQ for the vin# chart!
how did silverstate ford determine what my axle ratio is from the vin#?
and how did my local ford dealer determine that silverstate ford was incorrect?

...Johnbeym, I think what the dealers are referring to is your B.O.M. (Bill of Materials) sticker which can be found on your passenger side, axle arm, facing the rear....

...It was put their during assembly and references your axles and parts. and probably is referenced in your vin #...This thread is partially correct but has some good info...I can't find a pic I had of my B.O.M...:dunno:

A 3.55 gear ratio is denote by the "45".

My axle code is 43, which is a 3.08 gear ratio.

There were (as far as I know) no stock 4.55 gears on any explorer. However a few of the hardcore Ex's on here have aftermarket gears that high...and higher.

...I haven't seen any reference to the Explorer's having an axle code with 4.56 gears however, a few Rangers did have the option of 4.56 gears..In the '99-up Rangers they are 31-spline...

axle code
R8 = L/S 8.8 4.56

wonderfull response from all on this subject!
thank you
i now believe i have a 3.55 gear ratio!
this means silverstate sold me the wrong rotor.
this i will confirm this afternoon when i pull my old rotor
(no i havnt done this yet)
ill be back!

I still dont understand how the brake rotors are different depending on the axle gearing. I have never seen this while looking up parts for any RBV, I have however seen many parts catalogs and look up systems reference D28 and D35 for Explorers, this must be where the difference in rotors is.

Someone tell me im not crazy.. please

as far as ive been able to find they are both for a d35

its more then that
all explorers have ''D35's"
the ratio differs
for reasons still unknown
the thickness of the rotor differs
(this is known as the height, hence, 2. whatever ,refers to a deck height)
I don"t have a scanner(unfortunately)
i have found pictures in catalogues that diagram this
I WILL BE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
