ok.. i crawled around under the 2001 sport last night thinking about getting a better muffler.. and was shocked to see that after the main muffler.. there is what looks like a second muffler that is about 10" long and 4" in diameter.. its perfectly round..

what the hell is this thing?

May be a resonator. Just another way to keep the noise down.

It is indeed a resonator...

every one I've looked under had the same basic setup as if the 30"x 8" muffler wasn't enough!! The exhaust from the cat back weighs alot, it surprised me when I removed mine and installed the Flowmaster. Resonators are supposed to improve tonal quality and remove undesirable frequencies.

It just seems rediculas to have so much restriction on the exhaust system.. 4 cats... 2 mufflers... why not just stuff socks into the pipe.. that would be quiet too.

4 cats?!? Mine has 2, and didn't have a resonator. I do agree that the stock muffler (and probably resonator) are restrictive, but the cats (if there are only 2) are not restrictive.

Um.....Are you telling me that if I remove my resonator(if I can even find the darn thing...) I will have a much louder Explorer? I have a Flowmaster 40 series on there at the moment and am just wondering if taking off this "resonator", which I believe I have seen before and taken for the catalytic converter, if I will have a louder truck? Anyone have any pictures of the underside of around a 1995 XLT like mine with all the parts having arrows pointing to each part? It would help a lot because then I'd at least be able to see where my cat(maybe 2 cats) and resonator are. Thanks guys....

I took off the resonater and welded in a straight pipe and i heard no difference.
