Hey, all,

I just removed the driver side half shaft from a 2001 explorer sport, and would like to get some suggestions on two issues.

1. After I remove the shaft, a small amount oil dripped out. Is it normal? Should it be completely oil free? The exterior around half shaft and intermediate shaft is pretty dry. I suppose this amount of oil is probably negligible.

2. I have a very difficult time to remove the circlip. How important is it to have it replaced? Any tricks or tool for removing it? Also I can't find a store online to purchase new circlip. I guess I will have to ask the dealership?

Thanks
Jia

Why did you remove it ? seal?

oil coming out is normal thats why the seal is there.
the circlip doesnt have to be replaced just leave the old one on when you put it back.
make sure when your done you check the oil level the fill is facing the drivers wheel right where you pulled the axle out it should be full to the plug level.

Both rubber boots on the half shaft are cracking. So I figure it's probably easier to just replace the whole shaft in stead of renewing the boots.

Also cheaper to buy a axle than two boots. the axle will come with a new circlip.

Only the driver side has new circlip, yes? On passenger side, the circlip is on the transmission side. The new half shaft doesn't come with a new circlip.

yes that is correct except its not the trans side its the differential side. pass side axle has a female shaft circlip is in the diff not on the axle.
