U.S. driver safety group sues Ford over touch-screen systems

I agree with 13Sport... the problems will never be fixed until they decide to get rid of Flash. It is a fundamental problem with the underlying foundation and no amount of programming from Ford is going to fix that

Nothing but a junk lawsuit to get lawyers rich.

Quick example of actual scenarios that MFT has put me in . .

1) Driving while it was < 30F outside, MFT decided to reboot on the freeway. During the reboot my defroster switched to blowing cold air through the bottom vents and no air to the windows. My windshield instantly fogged giving me zero visibility at 60mph, I did in fact have to pull over and wait for it to finish rebooting.

2) Driving while listening to music from my phone via bluetooth. MFT decided to reboot, during the reboot it switched the source from my bluetooth audio to FM radio. During the reboot there are no volume controls or ability to change sources or shut off the stereo. The audio level difference between my device and the fm radio made the FM radio at almost full volume (piercing my ears) w/ no ability to lower the inside volume for the almost 10 minutes it takes to reboot.

I think both of these are valid safety issues caused by MFT instability

Those are true safety issues. Perhaps the result of this class action suit will force Ford to upgrade all MFT vehicles that are susceptible to certain safety issues, a free upgrade to SYNC.

Forbes Update on Class Action Lawsuit

Ford's Motion to dismiss has been denied and the lawsuit has been granted class action status.

http://fortune.com/2016/10/07/myford-touch-lawsuit/

But the real news is some of the tidbits already revealed. Ford knew exactly what was happening with these systems.

One document described how a navigation crash stranded Bill Ford while having to pull over and wait for the Navigation System to restart.

Another implies that Mark Fields actually punched out his screen.

And again, MFT has been stable since 3.6.2. I really do not know what these owners want from Ford besides making the lawyers rich

Yes it was plagued with bugs and crap hardware (APIM failures) but it has since been fixed over several software updates.

I really hate Class Action lawsuits.. it does nothing for the owners and everything for the attorneys.

I agree that it only fills the lawyers pocket, but it also sets a precedent that big corporations cannot deny consumers their right to purchase a product that meets their satisfaction and most importantly; is safe.

Stable? Last night we went to the Welk Theater in Branson, MO for show using our Navagation in the EX. It took us past the theater about quarter mile down the road. That was after the center screen used my phone to make a call four times. The screen in the dash advised to select privacy. Rear camera stayed on wheni i went into drive. The list goes on and that was for one day!

Then go get your APIM replaced.

Yes, stable. the software is stable overall. at this point if you are seeing major issues, it is faulty hardware and it needs to be replaced.

And if you are going last places because it is not accurate, that is a map issue and has nothing to do with mft.

No, it wasn't fixed - and it was years before it was basically, but not totally stable.

When I bought my '11, the brochure didn't say "and we're including an unstable POS electronics system". I paid for what was advertised, they didn't deliver as advertised, and it's not unreasonable to be compensated for the difference.

Did I not say that they had both software and hardware issues and it took until 3.6.2 to become stable? even the forums have posted how much better it has been since then.

And as I said, if someone is having major issues now, it is a hardware failure, not software.

And lastly as I said again, I do not know what owners want from this class action.. Throw out a free upgrade to Sync 3.. they won't get a refund for MFT..

In the 2016's with the MyTouch and Sync (updated?) is the main annoyance with the bootup time? That would drive me crazy as I look for my phone to be connected as soon as I start my vehicle and call home to let the family know I'm on the road. I don't do much else with my iPhone and Bluetooth but I expect my wireless connection to be reliable. I listed to 3-4 radio stations and music CDs more than anything else.

Should I avoid looking for a deal on a 2016 and stick with the 2017 models?

The primary phone connects within a few seconds in our 2014 with v3.8, flawlessly. Started it, buckle up, phone connected.

It's taking some restraint to keep this civil, but I'm tired of hearing about how Ford 'fixed' the MyFord Touch system.

First, they made it more stable that it was in the beginning, but I wouldn't call it stable. With respect to Navigation, Entertainment, and Phone, the $300 Jensen VX7010 in my '98 Escort ZX2 outperforms the two MyFord Touch vehicles that I have.

Second, I still have to occasionally pull over, turn off the vehicle, open and close the door, restart the vehicle; just to get the stupid thing to connect to the phone.

Third, I still get the random No GPS signal errors and I'm no where near a major city.

Fourth, I still get the stupid incoming text message alerts that can't be ignored/read/dismissed. Often on top of the rear view camera display. Only way to get rid of them is to restart the vehicle.

Fifth, I still can't believe how long it takes for the screen to refresh/react to a tap. It's still very slow/sluggish. I guess stable just means that the reaction time is more 'consistent' now, (except for when it doesn't answer the incoming call).

Sixth, where are the features that the Ford Sales People promised with an update coming any day now. Instead, every update traded some feature/function for stability.

I can keep going, but I guess I will end it with "Where's the all might Applink?". They demoed it so much 5 years ago, no one believed they would drop it all together.

It really depends on how tech savvy you are and how picky you are.

Having lived through 2011-2014 MFT issues and now having a 2017 Explorer with SYNC3 to make a direct comparison I would not take a 2016 .

The 2017 has other improvements but SYNC3 itself has really been an improvement over MFT for my level of use.

Everything from bluetooth connectivity to the way it deals with HVAC and Apple CarPlay make it a must have IMHO. Its never frozen, dropped a connection, or failed to connect my iPhone7.

Never mind future development.

And lastly as I said again, I do not know what owners want from this class action..
$$$$$

There were huge problems, and to say that no compensation is desired is a choice you can personally make. I'd like at least 50% of the option cost. Probably won't ever get that, but it's what I want based on the problems with the unit, what it took to fix it, etc.

When I bought my '16, I thought long and hard about not having Sync 3, but in the end, with the changes that were made long after introduction, I decided it was worth the risk.

Is it flawless now? No - but I haven't had any of the lockups, reboots, no connects, etc. I've not had to disconnect power to reset it - and I had to many, many times on the old unit.

I'm not a litigious person. I think people who join this board to ***** about their purchase before ever attempting resolution at the dealers are insufferable twits. But in this case, yes - give me $$$$$. That's what I want, and what I feel everyone who purchased the original version are entitled to if they so choose.

I don't see any judge saying that someone is going to get that kind of money (the person who started the class action always makes out but not the others who opt in).

Don't confuse my posts as saying that it wasn't severely flawed. Even I had the APIM replaced once in my Explorer and I've had some reboots and black screens in the past.

Have to put this out there though... my wife had a major issue with the Navigation about a month ago. She decided to record it because she was going to put her fist through the screen.

It is well worth watching the majority of it.. I was in hysterics watching the video.. you can definitely tell her frustration in the video. I then got in my truck (F350) and did the same address and it worked flawlessly the first time. I recorded it as well and showed her... she wasn't happy hahahaha.
