Uh-oh..problem!

Hi all,

My 93 XLT I bought for my daughter's first car started "chattering" when giving it gas during a driving lesson this AM. Chattering got much louder & by the time I pulled back in the driveway, started to run hot & smoke coming up from I'm not sure where but I "think" the valve covers (popped the hood but couldn't tell exactly). Has oil & trans fluid & neither smell nor look burnt.

Not much of a description but any ideas off the bat? It has 143K miles, rebuilt auto tranny @ 120K. My $1,000 deal of the year last year may be in trouble!

Was it running hot before it started making the noise, and how hot did it get? Was the 'chattering' a pinging noise, or a metallic noise?

not a pinging...a loud almost bearing rattle type sound when gas applied...was not running hot until right after it happened

any ideas?? thanks
