Gents, here's a few pics of this X i bought recently. Need to ID what I've got, and figure out exactly what's needed to get this Ranger front axle assy out... will be going back to Xplorer gear.

Pics are worth a million words:

Ranger front axle assy. in 3.45 (yuk).....

I assume there's two pivot point holes for different size lift and springs. How much lift (and spring) would be used for the other mount hole?

Why does this bracket have THREE mounting locations, and the one above only have two?

all help appreciated!

I'm hoping that I just need to grab the left and right halves of the axle and install them.
What about the steering hardware? Driveshaft? Can I re-cycle the manual hubs on the explorer axle? Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks!

...I'm confused......You bought a Ranger or an X and you want to take parts off of which one for what???

...If you plan on driving the vehicle in the first pic, remove that steering stablizer before you get into an accident...That, and anything else should never be near your pitman arm..

..It looks like a Superlift 5.5" lift kit, other hole is for 5" option...I could be wrong..

OK sorry.. I get ahead of myself sometimes... all these pics are of the SAME vehicle. Only talking about one X here, and the best way to get it all straitened out and peachy.

I bought this 92 X.. the original guy was going to use both Ranger axles and stuff a 302 to do the local mud runs. He sold it to my bro who was going to drive it, and D did the rear SOA with an X rear end.. was simpler than fitting the Ranger rear he said.

So now the X has a Ranger front axle, and an X rear. The ratios dont match, and the X stuff is preferable to me anyway... so that brought the question of which X parts do I need to swap this X BACK to an X front axle assy... the ratio thing I can deal with.

Pertaining to the multiple mounting holes for the pivots of the axle carriers, it ~seems~ as though I'd want to ensure the proper geometry... and prevent excessive Camber adjustments too.

Also knowing what lift kit parts are what just makes sense.. and I also am unsure what kind of springs are up front.

Here's my X, which is what we're talkin' about...

I'm not a huge 4x4 guy, but I've had a few. My fav was the old 76 J10 Jeep... 258 6 banger, 4.10, 3 speed. that thing got it done, never pretty, but it got there in it's own time. :)

Sorry for the confusion folks.

...This link should help and be sure to check out the pdf's..;)

Today ~you~ are "Da Man"!

I knew Rangers and Explorers shared lots of similarities.. so this kit would fit either type of truck, yes?

The only thing I need is a TTB front assy. from an Explorer, and I'm good? Looking like I should go with a drop Pitman Arm, mine has Ford written on it.

Just came back from the car wash.. man a bad Power steering hose sure makes a mess!

...Your explorer is an RBV, Ranger based vehicle..;)

...When shopping for a pitman arm be sure to check the "indexing" first..It is how it is splined to fit your steering box...Some are X indexed but check yours first..;)

...I'm heading out, good luck on your project...:biggthump

Yeah that's a D28 front. Any D35 will bolt up, doesn't matter if it's a ranger or explorer or bronco II. Watch out for the hybrid D35s found in all 2.3 and some 3.0 rangers after 92, it can be identified by the smooth pig, real D35s have ribs on the pig. Also D28 hubs will not fit a D35.

Good info. I'm in the mind of finding a stock 1st gen stock unit... for now... I'll be looking to 4.10 at some point, and a lock-right or some such thing for the front. LS will hopefully suit me for the rear, being it will get driven a good bit. That's in the future though.

glad for the info on the hubs too, i wondered about that. you saved me from jacking up her 93 to find out. :)

in a few we're going out to mark the rear wheel and driveshaft.. if she dont try to run me over we'll see what ratio this rear is... might use the string method to be sure... hehe

Checked the rear axle... 3.73 open diff. well, if I find a 3.73 front I don't have to fool with the rear, for a minute anyway... I do have a 3.73 LS under the wrecked 2wd tho... it's a start.

guess i'll get quick at working axles around on these things.. hers needs springs, I'll be swapping mine around a time or two, and the gen2 parts truck has some rear disks to donate. shame that gen2 is 3.55 (sigh)

Anybody wanna clue a fella on splines? these 8.8 things 28 or 31 in explorers? Bah, I'll be playing with the search thingie again huh? :)

....

tbars.. soon as you said something about removing that steering stabilizer I went out and thought about it for half a second. It's in the parts pile now. heh good call.

...Very smart move...:biggthump

For anybody listening.... <grin>

I read on here (or TRS?) that a stock X front spring (installed/sitting) is roughly 10.5".. mine are about 13.5". I'm ~assuming~ that this truck has the kit with 4" springs, and that an X is a little heavier. Anybody confirm this?

So, with a SOA rear (and saggy springs..heh) I outta mebbe do the F150 coil perch thing, and hopefully get my Camber looking better while leveling up a bit. It's out, and it screams it with the "eyeball leveling device".

Question: Can anybody tell me if the camber bushings are the same for a D28 and a D35??? If so, I'll not hesitate to buy some for this front end... and keep 'em for later if I ever need them.

I would guess you have a 4" lift. Nope, the camber bushings are different.

Thanks for the info Hahns...

Been looking around at car-part.com ... thinking heavily about pulling a few things off the junkers/donors here and sending the rest to a scrap yard. Hopefully the same yard that will supply me a d35 front end. heh Don't really care about putting any $$ in my pocket, considering I'll keep a few totes of parts to keep me running.

Well....found a D35 for the X. Pickup tomorrow (hopefully).

Dunno if it was a great deal.. $200 for the whole shebang - calipers, radius arms, auto hubs, etc.. was cheaper than many of the car-parts.com guys, but not all.

Hmmm... since I have a D28, I understand (from TRS) that normally I'd need the D35 drive shaft. Since I'm lifted 4" (and seriously looking at 6").. need I bother? Would the slightly longer D/S be better for me?

Your rig may still have it's original driveshaft, I know on my dads 90 4x4 ranger the driveshaft had plenty of extension left it to work fine with the D28 that was put in it after I took the D35.

D35 is in.

So I was going to get it all roughed in for alignment... figgered hey, might as well circle the field.

that didn't go well... busted a spring (passenger side)!
Found out a shock is bad too! (driver side.. leaking)

So... one of the fellas here hooked me up on some 6" springs. Sweet.

Blast it.. now I need shocks.
Ack. 6" springs, and I had 4" before.
Brake line time (they're stock!).

My busted shock has N8054S stamped on it. I'm assuming that's a N8000 series skyjacker shock, 4 inches longer than stock?

Think I'll start a few thread on this truck soon... Since I know what I've got this one is moot now. heh

That sucks about the spring and shock.

I have set of Skyjacker Hydro shocks for a 6" lift if you are interested. They have about 3000 miles of road driving on them and have NEVER been used off road. If you are interested, $25 + shipping and they are yours.

Man, this is a great way to start the day.... my coffee isn't even ready yet!!!

Yea, I'm all over that.

Thanks!
