Hello all!

1997 OHV

Ok The plugs were not that bad got it done in an hour, the hard part was getting the wires through the plenum on the drivers side.

I started her up and drove around for a bit and it idles a little better but its still not very smooth granted it has 166K on it but it still idles very rough I mean enough to shake the truck.

Last week I got a code reader and pulled 2 codes,
P0171 & P0174

I searched the forum and did all the things noted below plus I added seafoam to 1 tank of fuel and ran it till 1/8 tank and put 1/2 a can through the booster yesterday before I changed the oil and I changed the plugs this morning.

Is there something I missed? I cant seem to find any vacuum leaks where should look now?:(

Cleaned MAF
IAC-new
DPFE & vacuum lines-new
PVC & hose- new
Fuel filter-new
Oil & filter-mobil1, motorcraft -new
Air filter-new ,napa gold
Plugs -motorcraft plat
Wires- napa gold

Thanks this forum made it very easy to do all of this! and you can do the plugs with out taking off the wheel

remove the flap from inside the wheel well and access it from here, the plugs will be right in your face once that flap is pulled away.

+1 I just did this today, and taking the wheel off and removing that flap makes it a whole lot easlier. I didn't use any swivels or anything, just some small extentions.

I always replace from above. I just have a large assortment of 3/8 drive extensions so I can pick the one(s) that work best. I think the rear plug on the AC side (pass side) is the hardest one.

The 97 Explorer 4.0 OHV is easier for me than my 89 Ranger 2.9 was w/r/t changing plugs. Either that, or I've gotten better with practice. :p:

Through the wheel well is the way to go!

Might wanna try cleaning the throttle body. Tried a new fuel filter? Also might wanna pressure test the fuel system.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Yes checked for leaks, put in new fuel filter, cleaned throttle body . How do I check Fuel pressure?

is the idle rough when the engine is cold or warm? what about neutral vs drive? does the idle change during hard braking or tight turning?

both warm and cold a little worse when its hot like after a freeway drive. there are times when its not bad and its not as rough, it also surges when the AC is on. If I disconnect the vac line that goes to the EGR it idles higher and a little smoother but not much.

I dont know maybe my O2's?

shot in the dark here, but you could try replacing the EVAP Control Solenoid. I chased a rough idle for months and it turned out to be the solenoid.

The EGR should be off at low speed/idle. When it is on (in the case of a failed solenoid) the result is unstable combustion resulting in rough idle.

Cheap enough part and very easy to access/replace.

is that the solenoid on the plenum with all the hard plastic vacuum lines going in it?

part number #EVS58 at Autozone if you want to see a picture of it

it has one electric connection and two rubber hoses running to it

it's mounted between the IAC and the PCV, driver's side

Thanks man yea I saw it yesterday when I was changing plugs, I will give it a try.

Ok I bought it last night and replaced it with a new one from autozone and it worked! My wife just called and the CEL came back this morning, I did not disconnect the battery to clear the codes after I changed it and I am at work so I will check the codes tonight and find out if its still the P0171 & P0174. But the idle is smooth as it can be so I am happy about that.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Happy to Help.
