Well, I successfully bypassed the compressor and she's running again, so that's good.

I took part of the clutch apart, and it was wasted. The compressor is definitely siezed up real good. So, I guess that's going to have to stay dormant for a while. I can't help but wonder if I would have charged up the system, would I have prevented this whole mess? I'm kinda kickin' myself for this one.

It's a R 134a system in a '94 Exlporer Sport. When it comes time to get the AC fixed again, anyone have any idea how much it will cost me? A new compressor and clutch go for about $300. What other parts will need to be replaced? How much labor are we talking here?

Thanks again,
Marc

check out the AC thread in useful threads forum, it has a lot of info and should answer your Q or give you the info to make an informed decision. You are likely going to need a new accumulator, compressor and clutch, possible condensor, possibly the return line with the "muffler" in it and of course a new expansion valve, plus a good system flush. You are looking at around $500 to $600 in parts alone.

Don't fault yourself for this. You may never know why the compressor seized. It may have just served its useful life, and that's it.

Short of a catastrophic leak at the lowest point in the freon circuit, it is difficult for the compressor to run completely out of oil. Most have a kind of reservoir where the oil is most needed so that doesn't happen.

My compressor took a crap also. Go to the pick and pull and buy a used one. Or check out the people parting out the X's on this site. I'm sure you can save some money buying used parts.

Given the high costs associated with compressor replacement (flush, evacuate, recharge), I suggest a rebuilt or new compressor.

Thanks mssmith65, that makes me feel a little better about this. When the time comes, I'll probably just purchase a new compressor. Although it may be awhile!

I went thru this last year. Started with a chattering noise, progressed to a grinding noise, then the clutch bearings failed and fun ensued. Cost me just under $600 all inclusive. Oh, and then the idler failed. And then the tensioner failed. I'm getting pretty good at changing belts!
