2002 Explorer Limited
I too experience the shudder problem and have ever since I got the vehicle. I bought my 2002 Explorer Ltd with 18K miles on it and still under warranty. Right after I bought it, I took it back down to the shop mgr and asked him about this "noise" i was hearing. He got in it and we took a drive. He said that was "just the way AWD is". And that was the end of it.

Three years later, it still does it and it's worse. I had to take my Explorer in for a recalled lift gate hinge replacement, and decided to ask the new service mgr about it. He got in my truck and we drove around and he immediately said, "This has ltd slip and it's your clutches chattering." I was livid! I told him the story about asking years ago while it was under warranty, and he said, "It'll cost about $660 dollars to fix cuz we just did one on an explorer". So, I was mad! If they had caught this when I asked, it would have been under warranty. I then came back to work and did a search for limited slip, clutches, etc, and it led me to here!

I then realized that many of you experience the same thing. It was then that I learned about replacing the fluid, using friction modifier, etc. I was resigned to take my truck to my gear head father in law's house and have us change the fluid out, since he knows how, and I don't. Plus he has a garage. Anyway, the more I thought about it the madder I got.

I play in a popular rock band on the weekends, and as luck would have it, the owner of the dealership was there. He knows me and my family very well, and has always taken great care of us when buying Fords. My dad and I both own a local insurance agency, and they like to see us in their cars. So, we chatted it up, he loved the band, etc. On the way home I decided to go down to his office the next day and tell him about this situation.

I went in and told him that I was really upset by this, etc, and he said, "You should always come to me right away with any problem". He explained how the old service manager was a great guy and great with people, not as qualified as he should be. That the guy is a master technician with loads of experience.

But the bottom line? He said to "call first thing Monday and schedule it for repair and we'll take care of all of it". So that's what I did! They are ordering the parts and will call me when they are in!!

The new service mgr told me he has his own theory why the Ford clutches do this, but wouldn't tell me. He also said that Ford has redesigned them and I will be getting the new design! Hope it works out!

I'll let you all know!

Super, I hope your good luck holds!

Well, I took my Explorer in and got it all squared away. They put in new clutches, which happened to be recently redesigned by Ford, and the vehicle works perfect now! No shutter. He said mine were really shot too. Of course, it was shuttering at 20,000 miles, and I now have 87,000!

The dealership kept their word and fixed it all for free since I did ask about the problem while it was under warranty, and they trust me. I have a really strong relationship with them, and they treat me like gold. This is why I'll keep going back there to buy Fords. That's EXACTLY how good customer service should be. I'm a local businessman in town, and they like to see me drive by in whatever Ford they sold me. So, it's just good business sense on both ends really.

Weeeeeee!

Jason
