Hello all . I am new to this board. I've read a few threads about trans problems but I'm not sure if my problem is similar to others. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have an 02' Explorer 4x4, 4.0 ltr, Auto 4spd, 104k miles. For the past few months, I've experienced hesitations during hard acceleration as if the fuel pump was cutting out. I would experience, through light acceleration, a whining noise just before it shifts into 2nd gear but no others. After taking it to a shop (not a Ford authorized dlr), he said my problem is with the transmission and needs to be replaced. I have not gotten a 2nd opinion yet but someone did tell me to get the tranny flushed and put in Mercon 5. I did that about 2 weeks ago and ALL the problems magically disappeared! Unfortunately, it only lasted about 3-4 days and all the problems came back. Can someone give me guidance on what the problem may be? Do I really need a new transmission? :exp:

Welcome to this forum! The filter needs to be replaced. Sometimes a power flush could dislodge debris which is caught inside of the filter, and push it into the crevices of the valve body. You might have to flush it again with the new filter installed.

Thanks for the quick response. I plead ignorance but don't they normally replace the filter during a flush and fill? I'm only asking because I don't know.

Thanks for the heads up on that as I looked at my receipt and it did not show they replaced the filter. I will have it done this week and follow up with you. Thank you! :exp:

Shudder is nearly always Torque convertor related. The TCC solenoid can be at fault.... the fluid can be bad... Valve Body bolts can be out of torque spec, your VB gasket could be damaged, or you could have a damaged torque convertor clutch.... me? I'd betting replacement of the TCC solenoid (is this a W with a block as opposed to a single solenoid?) and I'd also replace the VB gasket at the same time.
