For the last few weeks I have noticed my upper radiator hose was collapsing when the X would cool down after being run for a while, when I park it at night. When ever it is running the hose seems solid and is not swelling. When I remove the radiator cap the hose returns to normal and the radiator is a little low. I have added more coolant every so often to fill the radiator but it is now startiong to pump into the over flow bottle. Could the upper hose be bad, a bad thermostat, or maybe just air in the system. Also it is taking a long time to heat up(longer than it ussually takes sometimes 20 minutes). Any help or ideaswould be greatly appreciated.

try a new radiator cap and replace the upper hose it sounds like you have a small leak when under pressure

Sounds like a bad radiator cap, but it could also be a clogged hose from the radiator to the overflow, or maybe the overflow has crud in the bottom blocking the coolant from flowing back into the radiator. As the coolant cools down, it becomes more dense, and takes up less volume. The radiator cap is supposed to allow coolant from the overflow reservoir to flow back into the radiator to compensate. If it doesn't, the coolant level will be low, and a strong vacuum will be created, which causes the radiator hose to collapse.

Last time this happened to me I had to replace the Thermostat to fix it.

Thank you all very much. I will go get a new cap and check the overflow bottle. I will probably pickup a hose and stat just in case.

Hi all,

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I am experiencing this exact problem. I was just wondering if you figured out for sure exactly what caused yours to collapse.
I recently had mine in the shop to have the bypass coolant hose replaced along with the thermostat. When I got it back i went ahead and replaced some other stuff belts, pulleys, and radiator cap. The problem started at this time. Just wondering if maybe the cap is bad or the hose or something else.

Thanx

Dale
