i cant find my last post!
I bought a dynomax bolt on exhaust. it just wont fit the way the diagram says. So this time I didn't reverse the whole muffler, like the inlet port in the back (I heard that caused back pressure, and it made my car cut off funny. I just turned the muffler upside down this time. It seems to fit good, but its kind lose ( no clamps yet!!!!!!) I need to know if turning it upside down like this will have the same effect of that back pressure like when I reversed the muffler. The muffler is also about an inch from the long pole that drives the back wheels. It doesnt seem to bother anything else. Thanks give me some help! I put a picture below. I have a 3 hour drive tomorrow, and I want to take the old explorer, so please help fast!

Ok, sorry to be so impatient, I have to fill her up with gas soon, tonight, Im leaving at 4 AM to go sking. Please help! Thanks

If you're wondering if you can installe your muffler upside down then yes. As long as the inlet is still the inlet and the outlet is still the outlet. That "long pole" that connects the rear wheels is called the driveshaft in case you didn't know.

And if you are an inch to the side of your driveshaft it probably won't be a problem. If you are an inch above or below you will likely be bouncing your driveshaft off your muffler when you hit the bumps.

Ok thanks guys. Im gonna wait till morning for a few more replys on the board before I go ahead and clamp it down for good like last time. I will do it right before I leave. Remember to check out my pic! The way it is in the pic, is the way I put it, its SUPPOSED to be the other way.

As long as it isn't going to hit your driveshaft or rub on the body, the orientation doesn't matter (except, of course, backwards). Have fun skiing!!

Just out of curiosity, what would happen if you put the muffler outlet part in the inlet and the inlet as the outlet?

Depending on the muffler design, you might get a back pressure problem. If it's a glasspack (think old Thrush mufflers) it wouldn't make a difference. Most of the mufflers have baffling that is designed to take the exhause pulse in, dampen the sound, and let the gas escape. Since mufflers are designed to kill sound, and sound is a wave, you can design baffling in the muffler to trap the sound waves and convert them to heat and mechanical energy. If you put the muffler on backwards, you might impede the gas flow instead of the sound, cause back pressure problems, and kill your power and gas mileage.

Oops. Got carried away again!! I get going on the tech end sometimes.

Basic answer: It might kill your performance.

Thats what I did at first, because it fit real well like that and I am stupid. I had to get a shop to take it off for me. Anyway, when I would turn the car off, it would try to stay on, and then conk out. And when you cranked it a lot of exhaust at one time shot out the side.

hehe... long pole.
