Just gone out to my ex, started up and put it in reverse and theres no reverse gear! Drive still seems to work but if i go any further forward i'll be into the garage door(drives on a slope!) Anyone any idea off the bat or anyone know of any garages in Surrey that are good with Ex's ?

Never had any problems before, 70k on clock full servce history no wierd noises from gearbox or anything.

When you put it into reverse there is a very very slight noise like its going in but it doesnt.

Appreciate any help
Si

Could be just the selector cable has stretched slightly. If you try and move it around a bit does it go in then?

Nah nothgin at all Howard, just turned it round on the drive by towing it out, just wont engage at all. Have spoke to Howard on here and Justin, just toying with what to do now recon my box or get a second hand one fitted!

had a ford f150 when i lived in the states, and that also lost reverse, altho not overnight, was told by a work colleague to pour a bottle of brake fluid in the tranny because it was caused by worn seals, and brake fluid swells the seals, anyway i did and it worked, I was told it would only last for around 10,000 miles but i got rid of the truck soon after and went chevvy and swore id never touch another ford ever again, and now ive got a ford explorer and it keeps reminding me i should have stuck to what i said..damned fords never a week goes by somethig either goes wrong or breaks, and to think that chevvy pickup did me 120,000 miles for just the cost of the gas and one fuel pressure regulator, and as far as i know its still going strong
anyway if your thinking of a recon box it may be worth trying the brake fluid first, youve nothing to lose

Ive been through a 2 trans , and every one i've lost gears in has had knackered clutches...
with the price of the fluid and valve bodies ect get a 2nd hand one unless u can afford a full rebuild , time you mess around with all the changeable bits while in the truck you could just change it ...

milage seems low though ...but as above -

have u got flashing O/D that will give you a code if you can get it to a garage ..
did you check the trans oil level while she was running ?
smells burnt ? colour dark red - bits of clutch in the fluid ? drain a bit out through the cooler pipe have a look then u can decide

Best of luck

Hi Rich

Cheers for the info, no O/D light at all, havent checked trans fluid, will do though. No burnt smell either,
Had a price of £900 for rebuild of my trans from Justin in Neport, might get chains done at same time to save on labour costs. My Ex is a keeper so probably worth doing in the long run.

sounds good plan - get it all done at once
not an easy job to do on your own either , 1 heavy mother (:

get it ready for Ford Fair (: > 8 / 8 / 10

you rolling again yet ?

Fuuny you should say that!
Am just waiting for Justin to drop my Ex off this afternoon!

Had to have a 2nd hand gearbox fitted as it was £1500 for a brand new one from Ford(which i didnt think was bad but couldnt afford), £1200 to have mine reconditioned or £700 just to fix the reverse problem! opted for a 2nd hand one for £425inc fitting plus he's done the chains and fitted me a new bonnet free of charge!

(: cool - all sorted now then (;
