Hi guys , i just recently earlier today replaced my egr valve and drove and everything seemed great , but then i drove a little farther and i heard the sound like something fell or whatever and now i hear a sound of like something loose or something

The sound seems to only be coming from the drivers side , and i can still hear it when its idling but mostly when i press on the gas more , so i checked the egr valve and it seems like its in there nice and tight , but then i also checked the radiator (which i just recently replaced , but its filled up all the way) and noticed the level was low

So im not sure what it could be , before today everything was fine , if i didnt know any better ide think its the egr but not positive , unless i put the old one back on to see what happens

I really need some answers soon , i go to work tomorrow and i need to figure this out asap

did you miss bolting something back down with the bolts to the EGR ?

im pretty sure i got everything in correctly , all the bolts , but for the fact that i heard something drop , maybe something wasn't in all the way and fell or something

It seems like it would have something to do with what i did , because i never heard the rattling noise prior to installing

Well its really sad , but i found out the problem was that i left a wrench inside the engine bay and so it was rattling around

One other question i got , like i said i replaced my egr valve but the check engine light is still on , do i have to reset the computer or something , i know in my 94 ranger that i just disconnected the negative battery for 10 minutes and that would restart it , is that what i do with this vehicle

What code are you getting?

Im not sure the exact number , but i have a friend that works at tire kingdom that he checked it and said the code was for the egr valve

Advance Auto parts will check the code for you and reset it... Also it should reset by itself after a few start-ups (and warming to the operating temp) - I think it's three starts.

Ok , well i only had started the vehicle 1 time since putting in the new egr valve , ive always just reset a computer after replacing some mechanical type of part

so after 3 starts and the check engine light is still on , does that mean there could probably be something else

Get the code read/reset with a reader or unplug the battery, press the brake pedal until the tail lights no longer light up and that should drain your drain off any excess power in the computer and reset it. Hook the battery back up. If a check engine light reappears, then it's probably something that wasn't solved by the EGR repalcement.

And yeah, I've lost a tool here and there by leaving them. But I've also gained a pry bar after a mechanic left it under the hood. I thank him every time I use it.

EGR codes are more often than not the DPFE sensor that controls the EGR valve.

Well i went to autozone and they checked the codes and the code was for the egr and the o2 sensor , he said i can go a little while before replacing the o2 just that the gas consumption will be a little worse but not much worse , he said its $45 for the part

So im wondering should i be replacing this asap or what , he showed me the 2 codes going off , he even reset the computer and the check engine light stayed off for a while , but then eventually came back on and due to o2 sensor

What were the codes?? We can't help you unless you give us the codes. We need the numbers because just saying an EGR code or 02 sensor code will not help anyone figure out what your problem is.

If it is in fact your O2 sensor, yes you can drive with it for a while, but I would discourage it. Your engine isnt running to its intended performance, which is bad for it. Running to rich or to lean can cause damage to internals in the engine and the exhaust system. You can also really gum up your engine with crap. 45 bucks now or 1500 later...

Well i went by advance auto parts , and they checked it and they didnt get anything for the o2 sensor going off , what they got was code #401 the guy said it has to do with the flow or something like near the egr valve , most likely its a vacuum line that goes bad on these vehicles alot he said

Did you miss the comment below?

oh... and asking most of the parts store guys to diagnose your vehicle is like asking the receptionist at your doctors office to perform your surgery.

Ok , i wasent asking his opinion he just offered it , so now that its saying its code #401 , is that the sensor , he reset the computer so i guess ill see if it comes back on , but if it does come back on then

So then would my egr been bad , or maybe nothing wrong with the original one , maybe just the sensor , what should i do now that i know its code #401

Ok well if the code #401 is for the sensor , then was it most likely that the egr valve itself wasent bad

I was reading online that it gets diagnosed alot thinking its the actual egr valve versus the DPFE sensor

Is there anyway to really know if my original egr itself is still good or that it did actually need replacing

Most likely you have a bad DPFE sensor.
