Most likely loose metal blowing around, caused by wind turbulence, like the heat shield on the exhaust.

You may have some air getting into the exhaust via rusted egr causing small backfires.

In any event, the DPFE is famous for failing and may be the cause.

Exhaust sounds can trick your ears when you are sitting in the drivers seat.

Ok well i put the dpfe sensor off and the check engine light finally went off and the vehicle sounds better , now i have another issues i was taking off the old egr valve and one of the bolts broke off the nut that is welded to the thing the egr screws f , so for now what i did was screwed the 1 screw back on for now so theres a small air gap

Well my problem is now i cant start my vehicle , is comes on for 2 seconds then goes off and the check engine light and the battery light comes on , and it started fine before messing with the egr , so i assume that is what is it but wanted to make sure

Well i fixed the broken bolt and put new ones on and its nice and tight and pretty sure theres no air coming out if at all very minimal

Well today i went to start it and it was very loud and engine shaking alot and sounded like crap at first and revving up on its own a few times but i just let it idle on it own and as time went on it got better still sounded a little crappy but once i revved it up on my own a few minutes later it started to calm down , still some shaking but dramatically less , and then 5 or 6 minutes after it started to calm down it started shaking just a little more again like it was gonna stall out or something but then it calmed down again and then just a few minutes after the engine shut off and i heard like a poofing sound and then i smelled a little smell not really burning smell but something like that

All all the temperature guages were still in the normal range , i didnt know if i restarted the computer on my own with just disconnecting the negative cable versus having like autozone or something restart it would mean why its running like crap a bit , because i know on my 94 ranger i used to have that when i would restart the computer on my own it would run crappy for the first 10 or so miles , but i didnt understand the poofing type sound , could that be air seaping out

I really need help on this as soon as possible , to try to figure out the problem , and once this is fixed im only gonna do small jobs on my vehicle , because this is frustrating

Hi there. Every time i've disconnected the battery and the computer has reset itself, my explorer has run rough and done strange things for awhile. It usually takes a good 5 mile run to get the computer to sort itself out (so i was told on here a few years back). I've had 2 explorers and they both done the same trick everytime the computer was reset and i just drove it to the next town and back (6 miles) and it always sorted the problem.

I almost figured that to maybe why its running rough , but i realized now i think i have a vacuum leak near the egr valve

A mechanic suggested me using a ton of epoxy around it to seal it up , is that really a good idea , if the metal got warped which i think it did a bit , i guess it kind of makes sense but i wanted to be sure

Well i found out the issue was the stainless steel tube that goes from the intake to the egr valve , there was a hole in it and so we just crimped it off and now its running , but one thing the mechanic guy said i guess its for the emissions or something and i might get worse gas mileage

Well atleast now it runs , but he suggested to just cut off were the hole is and run a rubber hose it , because its a vacuum line

But definitely once it was crimped off that now it runs alot better , so whats the easiest and best thing to do , the idea of running a rubber hose would be alot easier , but would that work
