I just picked up a SOHC to go in my first gen stock explorer and its a manual with just a 4.0 in it but I need to know if my transmission will bolt up and if i need to change anything besides the sensors and wires. the engine is a 98 with 166,000

Yes, the trans will bolt up (sort of). 7 of the 8 bolts will. The flywheels are different (6 bolt vs 8 bolt on the crank), if the SOHC was an auto, you have to find the right flywheel.

There is a lot more then just changing the sensors and wires. I built a custom harness to swap the SOHC into my '95, you will have to do the same. Or swap everything over to OBDII.

Just a few of the hurdles you will face:
-custom wiring harness.
-custom steering hoses.
-cut out more of the HVAC box then a 5.0l swap.

It can be done and its not all that hard, but its not a weekend project.

So should I get the wiring harness from the 98? and it was a manual but the transmission is gone. how much of the box do I have to cut out?

I used an '01 motor, a mix of the '01 and '95 harnesses, 97 fuel rails, and a '95 OHV computer on my swap. Its really up to you as far as how you want to go about it. You have a few ways to go about it.

-You can use a SOHC computer and harness, get a custom tune to eliminate the OBDII features that you dont want.

-You can use a SOHC harness and a OHV harness, cut them both up and solder and heat shrink all the wires, and use an OHV computer.

I dont exactly know about the HVAC box. The '95 is the same box as the 97+ with the SOHC. Check out Brett's swap thread, his is a 1st gen. I dont think there is anyone else on here, other then me and him, that are running an EEC-IV SOHC.

This swap is not for the faint of heart-there are threads on here with this swap. I replaced the firewall in mine, and used the entire harness from the donor Ex.(1997 in my case) I also used the 5R55E trans from the '97.
