1998 Ford Explorer XLT -
I have a stock 98 Explorer with a V6 4.0 SOHC with 200K miles that is cherry. Replacing the timing chains only and will run until it pops or gets close. Meanwhile, I want to buy another motor and carefully rebuild it to replace this poor excuse of a motor. Hopefully, there are better motors to do that with.

What other Ford motors will fit this vehicle if any, due to other issues?

Any help appreciated.

Really it's what ever you want, but another 4.0 would be easiest. A 5.0 next but there would be allot of work involved.

You could take a 302 boss out of an older mustang and go carbureted

Get a same year OHV 4.0.

I'm sure somewhere in the ford bible it says not to covet thy neighbors mustang. When it comes to motor swaps, just about anything can be done with enough money. The boss 302 is sweet but I couldn't give up efi.

Ok, I give up. Why would anyone want to give up EFI?

It's actually cheaper than you think to swap it with an older 302 I did it to mine the only downside is the gas mileage changes drastically and I don't have to try spending all day troubleshooting when something goes wrong

So what gets worse mileage than a Ford Explorer? A V8 carbureted beast Ford Explorer!

Did you go all the way back to distributor and points?

I did I went to a gm style dizzy a street daemon 625 carb eddlebrock 289 torquer intake custom exhaust ect. And I think it runs much better than it did with efi.

Mine is a beast probably the best thing I did to it though

Do you get more than 8 or 9 mpg?

Picture not working. :(

I get 11mpg in town and 9mpg on the highway but if I had OEM tires on it I would prob get a lil better then that
I get a bit better than that but I also changed out my gears for the bigger tires.

I wouldn't think that ANY engine swap could be termed easy, but I've never done anything that involved.
But it seems to me that the least complicated swap would be from your 98 4.0 sohc to a 98 4.0 ohv. Way easier than putting in some engine that never came in a Ford, or one that never came in an Explorer. Easier than putting in am Explorer 5.0, because with that you would also have to swap in a trans and tcase.
The ohv 4.0 is a proven tough and long lasting engine, just has a few less hp than the sohc.

The only swap that will work unless you are going carbureted will require swapping the engine, transmission, ECU, and cluster. You will require an entire donor veichele, and if everything is working you might as well just drive the donor instead. Not worth the time on these old dogs. Might as well build a replacement SOHC.
