I was reviewing the Max trailer weight in my operator's manual for a Ranger p/u and I was wondering why the manual trans is rated 3,360 lbs and the auto @5,660 lbs. using the 3.73 L/S diff.? Is the manual trans/clutch the weak link or is it the operator. I know the 5R55E auto trans is stated to handle 55Nm of torque. What's the manaul trans torque rated at?

The manual transmission will break with just the weight of the Explorer, and NO towing....I know....I did it.

But to answer your question....the Manual Transmission in the X and Rangers have always been Light Duty transmissions....the A4LD was ALSO a Light Duty trans (A4LD = Automatic 4 speed, Light Duty)...the 5R55E was about the 4th generation A4LD....MANY updated parts inside that transmission over the A4LD, and I wouldn't even think twice about towing with the 5R55E transmission...IF you had a transmission cooler on there too...AND you remembered to take it out of OD.

I incorrectly stated the torque capacity for the 5R55E, it should have been
750Nm (divided by two because of the torque convertor) to match the engine = 375Nm. So in 1999 was M5OD trans used in the 4x4 4.0L Ranger and the Explorer? Does anyone have the actual torque capacity for that manual trans?
I also noted that the 4R44E was stated as having a 600Nm torque capacity so I can see why a 5R55E would be a better choice for an automatic.
The reason I am asking is because I want to make my mind up as to whether to stick with the 5R55E trans in my Ranger or go to the M5OD for towing a 5th wheel that's got a 2000kg GVW rating. I know the 4.0L OHV engine is no stump puller but not sure the whole drivetrain can handle this kind of load for any period of time and still live. As the max trailer weight spec is 2567kg for my truck am wondering whether Ford is overstating the trucks true capacity and I'll just end up frying things in short order.
