Thanks for looking in -- A friend of mine used a v6 filter for an Explorer on a v8 engine and shortly after w/in a 100 miles the engine blew a rod through the oil pan. The engine did have slight noise and a 146k miles previously but just wondering if the wrong filter "could" do that much damage that quickly? Thanks

I believe that both engines use the same filter.

The '04 V6 and V8 both use Motorcraft FL-820S.

The block adapter determines which oil filter will work. The pre-2002 V6 have the same engine block but used an FL1A block adapter, thus those use an FL1A. You can swap those adapters if you chose to, but the filter has to match the threaded adapter.

So you cannot use the wrong filter by accident, it has to match the threads(which is an adapter tightened into the block).

Ford began changing to the metric filters, in the 90's with the modular engines.
