I still have the stock engine, but head gasket is gone and MPG is probably less then 10mpg. Need something new.

I'm not looking for much power, but definitely trying to stay above 200hp. HOwever, I really want the best gas mileage I can possibly get.

In terms of v8 power, I think the stroker 5.0 may be the easier choice instead of a modular 4.6. For v6 power, I was entertaing the thought of the over head cam 4.0 used in the 2005-10 Mustangs. Has anyone here installed (or heard of someone doing this) one into a 1st generation Ford Explorer?

What would you choose? Pros and cons anyone? I think both provide the horse power I'm looking for, but as mentioned before, I'm looking for mpg and probably ease of installation.

THanks for the time!

4.6 V8 won't fit

The 4.6L V8 is wider than the 5.0L V8. I believe you would have to do lot of cutting to make it fit. All of the SOHC V6 engines are subject to timing chain guide fatigue failure. The 5R55 series transmission is not as robust as the 4R70W. I suggest the 5.0L/4R70W if you're looking for power potential and reliability with least installation effort.

Yeah, and it seems I'll be spending about the same. I didn't know the 2005-2010 4.0's had these fatigue issues. I knew I'd have to change transmissions, but figured the newer transmissions were just as strong.
