I just installed a new exhaust system on my explorer. I got rid of the crappy Advanced Adapter (headmann Headers) and Y-pipe. They used leaky collector flanges and the headers leaked alot too.

Anyway, I bought a pair of stock 1996 Explorer 5.0 headers off of Section 525's explorer. I then ran open headers to the exhaust shop where I had them build me a LEAK FREE custom Y-pipe and exhaust system. I am happy to say that my exhaust is a lot quieter and no longer leaks WOO HOO!!!. Currently I am running 2.5in pipe from both headers that combine in to a 3 inch pipe near the Passenger side frame rail. THe exhuast sytem is plenty big for the 5.0. In the future I will install the Ford Motorsport headers. (But since they are the same as the 96-01 headers in shape, they will Bolt-up w/o any modifcation)

Here are the pics:

I hope to get better pics the next time I have it up on a rack.

It must have been pretty loud running open headers to that shop huh?

Keep up the good work!

I never want to do that again. (run open headers)
It was louder than a Jet engine on takeoff. I probably woke everybody up within a 10 mile radius. I got some funny looks from people when driving the 9 miles to the shop!

Back in high school, a classmate replaced his 305 in his 77 camaro with a 350.....The day it was finished(all work was done in the auto shop, the car was in there for a month), he frired it up inside the shop, it started first try, but with open headers!!

The shop teacher told him never to do that again, once all of our hearing returned LOL

Can you burn valves by running open headers/no headers?

my senior year in high school auto shop, i was replacing the timing chain and the rear main seal on our 84 caprice wagon. i had a 305 with 147000 miles on it and the carbon built up in the catalytic convertor and clogged the system and the pressure broke the timing chain. when we were replacing everything i had knocked out the honeycomb in the convertor and only had manifolds y-pipe and catalytic shell. i went to start it up and make sure it didnt leak and all that. there was a cop talking to the shop teacher about something, when i started it up the cop jumped and knealed down with his hand on his hip (he was in plain clothes and let his gun in the car. the shop teacher thought it was funny as hell and the cop thought the car sounded good even though it scared the crap out of him.

sorry for the long post.
