Hey there... we are on a quest looking for an Explorer for my sister in law.

It looks like the opinion is that the V8 5.0L is the way to go...

What I wanted to know is are there differences in the 5.0L throughout these years in terms of power? intake? etc? One over the other?

We are looking at a 96 AWD Limited at the moment with a V8.

Any comments or links would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Go for a 2001 if you can. Has the latest fixes and upgrades (PCM too) since it was the last year they made the 5.0L V8 (302)...

I suggest a 1998 or later model. The transmission was upgraded and the EGR is external.

My 97 Mountaineer had 250k when I old it in April with ZERO issues with he tranny.

Also, the heads changed in 97 to GT40P heads that supposedly give a little more horsepower.

Update.

We ended up getting the '96 that I was talking about earlier. The price was right, and only 170oookm. I figure all used explorers will need maintenance repairs... so thought it best to save a buck or two on the initial purchase.

Thanks for your input everyone!

What i've noticed:

1. All V8's/4R70W's are reliable combos, but the mechanical diode is an improvement found in 1998(?) transmissions and later.

2. The upgraded heads in the later models don't change the rated horsepower, but they did improve the EPA fuel economy (from 12/17 to 13/18).

3. IMO, the subtle styling changes make the earlier models look better.

Just my 2-cents.
