Vac Lines

Hey guys,
Had a strange problem last night. I went out after work to start my 94 XLT 4X4 Auto and it cranked funny then I heard a pop and a hissing. Started and idle began cycling. I looked under the hood and put the 3 vac hoses on the silver thing (EGR? It has a few vac lines connected to it, on drivers side rear of engine) and it started and ran perfect. I did a search, and I see it can be the tranny modulator. I didn't notice any fluid or anything, but I will check later. Is this something I should be overly concerned about? It only did this one time. Thanks!

Its happened to me a couple of times. In fact just happened last weeke again. Not sure why this happens but I haven't had any problems. She's done it 3 or 4 times in the past year or so. Hope that helps?

That vacuum port (sometimes referred to as the "Octopus") supplies vacuum to a number of things. A backfire often will pop the hoses (or caps on unused ports) off. On my 92 it happens about once every 6 mos or so. I usually lose little caps on unused ports of the Octopus, and keep a spare supply in the glove box. It's a minor annoyance once you realize what it is.

My 93 did same thing and the hoses were all loose from trans fluid.
Changed the modulator and all is good.
3 quarts of trans fluid that the engine eat!
