Still having problems getting my sploder runnin right.I have replaced the fuel pump, which was going bad, and fuel filter. I have also replaced all plugs and wires. I have cleaned the maf, and the entire throttle body, as well as the TPS. When I changed the pump there was a significant change in engine behavior, for the better, however, it is still running rich and has very inconsistant throttle response, the shifts are slow or late, and it is not throwing a code. I did notice that when I manually rev it, with the hood open, it makes a peculiar hiss sound. I tried spraying wd-40 around the area where the hiss is heard "wd-40 will burn faster than gas and the engine will revv when sucked into the vacuum leak" to no avail. I am assuming that at this point that the upper plenum gasket needs to be replaced at 240,000? or possibly a vacuum leak somewhere else that I am not aware of? I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue. The throttle response is spotty running better at some times than others, all issues fixing themselves, then going back to running like crap and idleing like poo. I have to say I am stumped, usually intermittent problems can be led to an electrical issue, so I will go through every fuse tomorrow.

Hissing sound would definately be a vacuum leak. There are any number of places for a vacuum leak to occur.

blue badge disease

starting to think the 400 bones I paid for this car isn't worth the trouble. I can get like 500 at the scrap yard for just scrap metal. How do I track down the vacuum leak, sounds like it's coming from the middle of the intake manifold. power is poor and stalls at a stop especially when the A/C is on. Then, for no reason, works great for a short while..... IDK.

What engine do you have? Only 400.00 for a 96? Worth more than that for parts. If it is the 4.0 OHV engine, the leak is probably the upper intake manifold gaskets. Tha upper manifold is kind of a PIA to remove, simply because of the EGR tube. With the engine running, spray some starting fluid around the manifold. The RPM will raise if there is a leak, then you will know what to concentrate on fixing.

redneck engineer

Looks like there was a redneck engineer in the family that owned this car before. one of the vacuum lines was plugged, and cast aside, the reason? because the three way tee was broken and they only had a two way on hand. I fixed this one. So, I found the floating vacuum line it's proper home, andf it runs a little better. By a little, I mean a little. Now, it still idles erratically, and runs like shaken poo. There is still a peculiar "pud pudding" coming from the exhaust. I haven't been able to get it to throw a code. I pulled the TPS, IAC, IAT, MAF, and disconnected the vacuum line to the EGR. Here comes the fun part. I turned the key and she ran, not well, but it runs. It sounds only a little different than when it is running like poo, but runs and idles, and has throttle response, but not under load. Here is the best part, NO CEL! I could not get this thing to throw a single code my way. I also replaced all fuses and relays, regardless of whether they tested good with the tester or not. I discovered, however, that there are two that make the tester light dimmer they are also the two that pertain to GEM module, so My GEM might need to be replaced. I'll do dome reading on this tomorrow, but as it looks I have a shopping list for the junkyard. I need to see if I can pull an ECU from another vehicle rather than the exploder, wonder what other cars came with the OHC 4.0 v6? I'll look that up too.

shared motors

we share motors with mustang, b4000, and the ranger, all of the models are fairly new, however. why would they put such an old engine into something like this?

Are you sure it is an OHC engine? It is my understanding the OHC engine was not used until 1997. In which case you have a NEWER engine. The OHV engine should be in your 96. What is the build date on the door sticker? That is assuming the door is the original one. If it was built, say, after July, then you may have a 1997, instead of a 96.

98

I am not sure why or how, but everyone thinks that mine is a 96' it is a 98 xlt RWD with the 4.0 OHC. The intake mani gasket is leaking, also I have a bad ECU, or PCM, or whatever, I am going to call a friend tomorrow who flashes ECM for a living to see if I get a new one, can he flash it for me. I also need to track the right one down, will any other part no's work? also found out the front bearings are both going, and the front upper and lower ball joints are going, as well as the upper a-arm bushings. so the laundry list is as followes, PCM, flasher type person, upper/lower ball joints driver and pass. side, upper bushings, intake mani gaskets. Anything I need to know before I do all of this work?

hello every body i have a problem with my 91 ex i just change my fuel filter and replaced my gas cap it ran better ,intell today i took off and got around a mile up the
road when it started losing power i smelled gas stuck in the middle of a enter section
i was pushing it to start it started and i quickly pulled to the side off the road i pop the hood and it was raw gas smell ,i figured out the gas coming from a plastic tube when i turn the key it sprays all over the place i tried to replace the rubber connector but when
it start the connector pops off and the truck cut off a lot of gas started coming out the exhaust ,is my problem just the connector ?or do i have a bigger one if gas coming out of the exhaust? and if it just the connector do i need some kind of glue or clamp?

Sorry about that. I must have misread the year in the vehicle description.

daijobu desu

It's ok, I wouldn't be mad about something like that. I have cleaned the MAF, TB, TPS, IAC. I have changed th plugs and wires and I have to say that the old plugs do not look bad. I need to change the wheel bearings on the front of the thing today, as well as the lower ball joints, and put some new bushings into the upper A-arm. It drives for now, poorly, but it dirves, so I know I will at least need an PCM, and an upper intake mani gasket. This forum is H U G E! I keep on looking around and finding more stuff, cool.

thanks for all of the help,

Sgt Kevin A. Davies, USMC
