I have a 2004 Explorer, 4.0. Vehicle built December 2003, engine built October 2003.
It has 140k miles and no timing chain issues...yet. The valve cover gaskets leak like a sieve.
I would like to replace the valve cover gaskets and the two upper hydraulic timing chain tensions, in the name of preventative maintenance.
I have spent literally hours reading through threads on this site. I've learned a lot but I am left with a few questions that I'm sure folks on here can answer from the top of their heads.
1.) When installing the new tensioners, I've read to hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over until you have oil pressure before starting the engine. I am a pretty cautious and particular kind of guy. I'm nervous that even turning it over with the chains loose could cause some of the plastic components to break. Can a guy put the new units in a pan of oil and "pump them up" by hand and then install them? Would a person still be able to tighten them if they were hard and full of oil? I plan on getting OEM tensioners.
2.) What is the torque spec for the tensioners?
3.) Torque specs and tightening sequences for intake and valve covers?
4.) Does a person need to break the fuel system open to replace any of this stuff?
Thank you in advance for any tips, advice, etc.
