I have 150k on our 96xlt V8. Last time changed the transmission fluid with Mercon IV. Now can only find Valvoline Max life transmission fluid locally. Says if is good for Mercon and Dexron. Has anyone used this in their automatic? Is this stuff ok? We are going on a trip with the rv and want to change it before we go.
Thanks

Jay

It is ok. helps condition seals. It has extra detergents I believe.

I use it in my 96 ex. and I have changed the fluid twice since 90k miles with it. ( Valovline Max life ) I have 230k on it now and it is just now starting to " slip " a little at the 2-3 shift.

but other than that it still runs down the road like it should, and there are no other problems.

I would recommend using it.

My trannys got 142,000 miles, used to slip real bad and was in desperate need of a rebuild. Put in some valvoline maxlife with some lucas trans fix stuff and it runs great, slips occasionally but knock on wood, its runnin like a champ.

btw does anybody know if the valvoline stuff is synthetic? the bottle doesn't mention it but I've heard it is.

Thanks everyone. I just changed the fluid. The old fluid was a little darker red but no burnt smell. The price of this stuff has gone up a lot since last change. It is an easy procedure to perform when you have a cooler up front to tap into. Found that the hose closer to the driver side is the one that pumps out the fluid.
