I have an 04 Sport Trac XLT V6 gas and want to replace my OEM gas cap with a locking gas cap. Problem is, I dont know if I should get a vented or a non vented from an online store.
I went to a local O'reilly and got a locking gas cap 2 weeks ago (they didnt know if it's vented or non vented). My check engine light went on after 3 days with a "gas cap error" and the odometer screen gave me a "check fuelcap" message too.

I've searched the forum and can't find the answer. I would appreciate your help. Thanks!

Cap has to be non-vented because the OBD system (on 1996+ vehicles) monitors vapor leaks - which is probably why you are getting that dash light.

Glad I know this...I've been thinking about getting one of these myself.

Thank you so much!
Need to get a locking gas cap because I have a friend that warned me that gas from his car was stolen 2 just weeks ago.

If anyone finds one that works, please post a link. I went to 2 local stores and bought ones they said would work, but the grooves didn't line up. Been looking for one for a while now.

thats why i travel with my shotgun in the back window and pistol on my hip. i actually have the springfield armory shield on my rear window

at any given time i have a box of shells, and 50 9mm rounds 25 are FMJ and the others are hallows

as for caps i recommend checking napa or carquest they tend to be more knowledgable and also their computer system is more usefull

i know its not a pretty option but what about adding a locking cover... drilling the gas door and installing a simple outdoor cabinet size lock like the ones on truck boxes? only thing it takes is a trip to menards lowes or home depot to get the lock then turn around and drill the door and cut a slit in the black plastic the filler neck attaches to.

I've had two "parts store" locking gas caps and neither are good, I always get the check gas cap light. I've been meaning to get to the Ford dealership and getting a Ford locking cap, I've been told by several members on several forums that the Ford cap is the only locking cap that works without issue. I'll probably get one tomorrow since I've been reminded again by this thread.

I bought a stant locking gas cap online. I'll post a report if I still get a check gas cap light. It Will be here by thurs or fri.

Update:
The Stant non-vented locking gas cap I got tripped my check engine light (check gas cap error).
So I got both check engine lights from vented and non vented locking gas caps now.
I guess my ST's gas cap is destined to stay unsecured after all.

Are you going to get one online or order from a dealership? Can you send me the part number you got once you get yours.
Thanks!

- Edit:
Just saw IZwack's post. Thanks for the part number.

Ford part number is in the link I previously posted.

I went to the dealership and they told me Ford doesn't make a locking gas cap for my Trac. I'll check out the link post above and also the Motorcraft cap as well. Thanks guys for the help again.

I have a locking gas cap and love it. After my neighbors got $200 in gas stolen out of their RAM and the mini van they have I would say it paid itself off...

I stopped at the local Ford Dealer and picked up a regular non-locking cap today. I'll fabricate a lock on the fuel door later. They said Ford/Motorcraft doesn't make a locking cap for an '03 ST. Oh well.

again like i said might not be appealing but top of door locking upward into a slit in the filler neck housing??? not sure if thats right lingo but the black plastic holding the neck up to the truck side is what im referring to.
