'96 Ranger
I have a '96 ford ranger. I bought it used. Sometimes when driving down the highway, and come to a stop, the engine will rev up when I push the clutch in, and sometimes when switching gears. It seems to be more noticeable when the a/c is running. I have been told to change the throttle control valve, and have done so, but it really didnt help. Can someone please enlighten me on what might be the problem.

as dumb as this sounds, i had a old 91 ranger with a 2.9 in it. had to pull the tranny out. when i put it all back together it was idling high for some reason as well. when i went to shut it off i was able to hear a whoosh sound. turned out a vacuum line fell off. i would say, maybe look for a bad vacuum line some where. you never know.

Welcome to this forum! It might be a vacuum line, but unlike the 91, the 96 doesn't have a vacuum modulator.

wasn't sure, but figured i'd put my two since in.as well go for the cheapest thing first right?!

Not sure if the throttle control valve is the same but I had a vehicle with a throttle position sensor which needed to be readjusted. All you have to do once you know what voltage it needs to be set to is hook up a voltmeter to it, loosen it and turn it until you get the correct voltage (from manufacturer). Not sure if Explorers have this or not. Just trying to help.

I also have the same issue with my 01. have replaced the ICV. with no success. But in addition to that I also have high temp gauge. Any other ideas. Have been checkin the vac lines with no success. Have noticed that if I clog the intake to the ICV the engine goes down to 700rpm.

Replacing the Thermostat Worked.. Thanks alot.. Had been bugging me all weekend.. Make sense now.. Thanks again BrooklynBay
