The aftermarket stereo system that came with my used 1999 Ford Explorer broke a few days ago due to a face plate issue, so due to my desire to keep everything in the car stock, I purchased a stock head unit. I had to rewire it back to stock because the people who installed the aftermarket head unit changed the wiring. It sounded great, however, it wouldn't light up, unless my clutch was pressed.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Has anyone had this problem?

Its got to be a bad wiring issue, maybe something frayed and grounding out in the harness. I'd look by the clutch pedal to make sure there isn't a loose wire hanging down there that they hardwired to the fuse panel somehow.

I will do that tomorrow and tell you the results. In the meantime, I did fix the issue with the lights on turning the stereo off, I pulled a wire out and it didn't do that anymore, and it sounded fine.

Was it the wire for the dimmer? If so, check your dimmer unit- they can go bad and that may explain that and also keep you from having more issues later. Pull it and see if the wiring is ok to the plug.
