vibration after lift

Mike

I just lifted my brothers '93 extended cab ranger with a Trailmaster 4" system. It now has a bad shake when you first start out. I am wondering if anyone knows what the pinion angle should be? I installed 2 degree shims and it did not help at all. Should the pinion angle be the same at the rear end as it is at the transfer case?

Yes the pinion angle should be the same at both the axle and transfer case. If there not the same you will get a vibration. Also, if there the same you might want to check to see if the u-joints are worn. Since there operating at a steeper angle then stock, they might have been worn before you put the lift on, but now since the steeper angle, you feel the vibration. Also if your running a 2 piece drive shaft with a carrier bearing, you would want to drop the carrier bearing down. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Mike,

Jon set you straight on pinion angle and U-joints.

I would also make sure that the rear driveshaft is long enough, meaning that there is enough stub into the shaft for good secure contact. If there is only a small amount holding the two together, it will tend to wobble as it rotates, creating vibrations that you can feel in the seat of your pants.

The best way to check this is to take the driveshaft off so you can actually see the amount of stub that is holding the two together. With the driveshaft in place, grab it close to the connection and try to move it side to side. A proper driveshaft should not give you much play, but if it's not long enough, you will feel some side to side play.

I would recommend seeking the expertise of someone who is skilled in this area. Hopefully you have someone close.

Good luck.
