2000 explorer xlt
Vibration problems in my 2000 explorer xlt. Its been checked out by two dealerships, muffler shop, transmission shop, and two independent garages. Found nothing wrong with the explorer although the guy at the muffler shop said my entire muffler and exhaust piping( including catilitic converter) was shaking.
THIS is the vibration I feel. Its not the engine. But something is causing the muffler and attachments to rattle, shake and vibrate only when stopped or idling.
What in the world can this be?

Well obviously your engine is indirectly causing the vibration problem. Maybe your truck is in need of a tune-up? Because if the computer sets the idle too low, alot of things will vibrate.

Tune up done, fuel injection cleaned, new serpintine belt, new tensioner kit , New Idle control (IAC), new plugs and wires, even reset the pcm computer twice, and still the vibration continues. Im really at a loss, other than that, its a great ford explorer!

which engine?? Did they check the motor mounts?

what does it normally idle at in gear? Out of gear?

My 2000 xlt is a SOHL 4.2L V6, Ill find out about the idle.

vibration

Motor mounts checked, transmission mounts checked,
all OK.Even the torque was looked at. The truck in gear and out of gear Idles at about 700 rpm. what do ya think?

could this be the "cat" heat sheild ?

not exactly sure what your trying to describe, but to me...
it sounds alott like the famed heat sheild rattling problem at idle soon as truck warms up.

have you gone under the truck and looked around to pinpoint the problem ?

Take it to an exhaust shop and have them put it on a lift with it running. Once they get it up, you can inspect it from underneath.

cat shield rattle

I did this. I went to a muffler shop, he put it up on the rack while engine was running, and from underneath said, " look at your whole muffler ,exhaust, and cat conveerter, its shaking. Then he put his hand on the heat shield thats over the cat and it all stopped. he said it was coming from the rear of the engine somewhere.
I had a new cat converter put in months ago under factory warranty at the dealer. Still it ratlles or vibrates most when its cold and always when hot at stop lights and just plain idling, a little more when I run th A/C.

if that's all it is.......

it's a very common problem, both of my friends have had the shield fall off of their X's.

I'm going to either have it spot welded or use a large stainless band clamp around the whole cat/shield.

mine only does it after a warm-up when the tach drops, after a long drive though....it stops.

but I know it's just the shield on my truck.
