I am doing some research for my GFriends explorer. She has a 98 4x4 xlt with the SOHC and 118k on it. It was recently diagnosised with a loose timing chain but the quote is 1800 to fix it. I think i can get a 2001 engine installed from a junkyard/ auto recycler etc with less than 50k for the same price so i am thinking to go that route.

Can anyone tell me
1. If the 4x4 and 4x2 SOHC are the same.
2. How much work is it to get the engine from a Sport track etc versus a true explorer?
3. IS 2000 and 2001 the less problem prone engines? Can i use 2002 plus?

ANything i need to watch out for?

Thanks in advance

Brian
