Follow this link for a great deal on what I think is the best air intake kit. Also know of a link that sells it for 234.99 with free shipping. I have seen them everywhere for $289 and up some as high as $315 so this seems like a kick ass deal.

Hey Lazz....where is the link???? :D

Cool, be sure to update us when you get it installed!

EXPENSIVE?? What are you talking about?

Is the correct one, the VOL-19640 (listed for the 98-00 4.0L SOHC Ford Ranger)? I assume so, but would hate to order the wrong one.

BTW Lazzman, did you get yours installed? If so, how do you like it? Has anyone done any dyno comparisons versus the Mac intake? I'm trying to decide between the Volant and the Mac. I like the Volant, but I'm trying to decide if it is worth the extra $64 to me.

Thanks!

Okay, I used the search feature and read some more on the various intakes. I think I'm going to go with the Volant. I just need to confirm the part number and I'm ready to order. :)

This site is full of good information.

I bought the MAC intake for $130.00 delivered from rpmoutlet.com. I installed it last week, it took about 45 minutes to install. The hardest part was getting the lower airbox out. I couple good tugs and 2 scraped knuckles later it was out. :D
I havent had the chance to drive it alot because of all the rain, thus no work. But so far i do see improvement. Usually when the gas needle reaches the half tank point i am at about 150 miles. Since the intake install i have reached 165 miles at the half tank point.
So far so good for my $130 investment. Plus gas prices are coming down around Central Mass. Average price I have seen is $2.72 for regular.

The next mod is a cat back exhaust.

Hmmm. That is $104 cheaper than the Volant.

the part # is based on how many holes you got in your intake tube, you probly have 2 holes in your intake tube for the sensors. The number on that one is a 19640, but if you have just one hole, then its 19540. If you want to be exactly sure, here is the original pdf from volant, this is the "NEWS ALEART"..... http://www.volantperformance.com/3dkls/iddb/Pictures/Ford40bulletin.pdf ...be sure to check out that pdf, because there are i think 3 versions of the SOHC out there now. Hope all goes well and you will be so happy with your Volant.

An to answer your question, ranger or expo, its the same setup.... ...but id go by the part numbers anyways. An the 19640 is the correct number for the 98 SOHC Explorer.

i can't wait to get my hands on one...lol

i put mine on last week. a pic are in the link in my sig.
i like it a lot. the intake sounds really good now, now i dont need an exhaust :D
the hardest part of the install was yankin the old box out.

Thanks for the feedback and the pic. I have my order placed for the Volant. :)

I think $239 for an intake is a joke! I don't care who's it is.. There isn't $25 worth of stuff there and then factor in a $40 K&N filter, that is if it's a TRUE K&N.

I've always made my own intakes from plastic and aluminum piping, check out this link for everything you need to make your own intakes for just about anything. You wont have anywhere near $240 in it if your handy...

it would have been much easier if i actually KNEW beforehand that it just yanks out.
i kept feeling around for clips and screws.

the kit is also a VERY tight fit, so it takes a lil muscle to get installed.

i bought mine used. :D it was a lucky find.

as far as the hoses go, it was pretty simple.
the iac hose, the one that goes under the throttle body and connects under the iac valve, had to be cut with a saw. if you still dont know which one it is, look at my pic in my sig and it is the hose closest to the filter box.
the valve cover breather line, i dont know the tech term, simply connected with a rubber hose.
the volant had a third hole, which i just popped a rubber plug in.

Thank goodness I only paid $234, then. I wouldn't want to be the butt of a joke. :) I've bought air intakes for several different vehicles over the years and used to get upset about how expensive they are considering the parts involved. I think I'm used to it, now. There is tooling involved, though and I wouldn't imagine that they sell extremely high volumes of each model. There are a couple of different levels of markups we are dealing with and these companies have to make money if they are going to keep offering aftermarket parts.
