Voltage Gauge/Headlights flutter

The voltage gauge and all lights(Headlights, Domelight)on my 91 Explorer flutters at idle, and decreases slightly but still flutters at high RPM's. I asumed it was the voltage regulator, and replaced the alternator and regulator as one unit. This solved the problem for about a day, but now it's returned and I can't figure it out. Can anyone help?

I have the same problem with my 91 xlt. I have the not had time to deal with it. I was just going to replace the alternater but if that is not the problem I won't I don't have any other ideas, but I hope some body does.

The first place I would check is your battery cables. There are numerous posts with people experiencing crazy electrical behavior that were all the result of the cables. I have run into this myself. Check for cracks in the insulation by the terminals, especially underneath, pull it back and I bet you find lots of nice green copper. More info and other good tips can be found at:

I fixed it! It was a bad battery cable. It was corroded on the inside.
I went to ford and they wanted $100 for a set, then went to Pep Boys and they had the OEM cables for $50. Hope this helps sombody...

Did the cables from Pep Boys come w/ all he connections to starter and all the other places they go?

Yes, the PEP Boys cable is an exact replacment.

A way to keep corrosion from coming back, that i've found to work very well, is to buy some corrosion resistant terminals, they look like they have paint on them, and the battery cables will be attached by a wing nut, but i did this along with hacking at my corroded battery cables to save money and not having to install new cables, only cost about $4.00 and haven't had a problem with it for 2 years.

The battery cables helped mine. Although they were a bit of a pain to change. I had developed some new swear words buy the time I had finished. It was well worth it. The gage and lights don't flicker anymore.
