Want it to look nice

Something non-mechanical for a change. have any of you guys with '97 or earlier Explorers (number plate to the left) tried to refurbish the panels each side of the top of the tailgate. Mine are now various shades of grey and in one large area, showing the base? white. Any suggestions what to use to get them back to original?

as it happens mines the same,(well that makes a change for our two cars lol)
you can use paint,but i am thinking about some of that film you can get maybe in carbon fibre look,i was thinking of doing the black bits on the door pillers aswell,just a thought.

Like the film idea - didn't want to use paint - think it would look tacky. Had hoped that somebody might come up with a wipe-on very dark grey liquid that is waterproof, sunproof etc. when it dries with a perfect finish, but perhaps I am being a bit too hopeful

well the film is easy to get,and with patience should be ok to apply,as for the liquid i have an idea there aswell,but you wouldnt believe me,well its high temp engine laquer,it dries great (even applied with brush) and will not be affected by the weather comes in a hundred colours.
I know it works i spilt some on a mk1v cortina once, couldnt get it off so painted the whole car and was rather pleased lol(oh the joys of youth)- buy a little tin and try some on a scrap piece of metal,it may work for what you want to do,i think its because its so thick and temp resistant that the brush marks dont show up.

Thanks, will certainly try the engine lacquer. Hope I don't spill any - don't fancy hand painting the Ex. Will let you know how I get on.

I got rid of my '97 rear end and went for the central reg plate rear end instead..

how did you have it done? film or spray?

Did mine with satin black spray. Not to bad to mask off and certainly worth the effort.
